Ingredients

  • 4 large apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons water or apple juice

Instructions

  1. Melt the Butter
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
  2. Cook the Apples
Add apple slices and sauté for 5–6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften.
  3. Add Sugar and Spices
Stir in brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and water (or apple juice). Mix well.
  4. Simmer Until Tender
Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender and coated in a thick, syrupy sauce.
  5. Finish and Serve
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Granny Smith apples add a nice tart balance to the sweetness.
  • Slice apples evenly so they cook at the same rate.
  • For extra richness, add a splash of heavy cream at the end.
  • Delicious as a side dish, dessert topping, or over pancakes and waffles.
