Cajun Cuisine: A Spicy Affair

Originating from the diverse cultural melting pot of Louisiana, Cajun cuisine is renowned for its bold and spicy flavors. The Cajun Chicken Orzo recipe embraces this tradition, infusing every bite with a rich blend of spices and a touch of Southern warmth.

Gathering the Essentials: Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Chicken breast (2, boneless and skinless)
  • Cajun seasoning (2 tablespoons)
  • Olive oil (2 tablespoons)
  • Orzo pasta (1 cup)
  • Onion (1, finely chopped)
  • Bell peppers (1 or 2, assorted colors, diced)
  • Garlic cloves (3, minced)
  • Chicken broth (2 cups)
  • Heavy cream (1/2 cup)
  • Fresh parsley (2 tablespoons, chopped)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Begin by marinating the chicken breasts with Cajun seasoning, a drizzle of olive oil, salt, and pepper. Allow the flavors to meld for at least 15 minutes while you prepare the other ingredients.

Searing Success: Cooking the Cajun Chicken

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Sear the marinated chicken breasts for about 6-7 minutes per side, until they’re cooked through and have a beautifully caramelized exterior. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set it aside.

Orchestrating Flavor: Adding Orzo and Veggies

In the same skillet, add a touch more olive oil if needed. Sauté the chopped onion, diced bell peppers, and minced garlic until they’re tender and aromatic. Stir in the orzo pasta, allowing it to toast slightly in the oil for added depth of flavor.

Creamy Crescendo: Incorporating Broth and Cream

Pour in the chicken broth and heavy cream, giving the mixture a gentle stir. Bring the liquid to a simmer and then lower the heat to medium-low.

Simmering Serenade: Merging the Flavors

Return the seared chicken breasts to the skillet, nestling them into the orzo mixture. Cover the skillet and let everything simmer for about 10-12 minutes, or until the orzo is tender and has absorbed the creamy goodness.

A Dish for All: Making It Vegetarian-Friendly

For a vegetarian twist, swap out the chicken for firm tofu cubes or sautéed mushrooms. Adjust the seasoning accordingly to maintain the bold Cajun flavors.

Garnishes and Presentation: A Visual Finale

Sprinkle the dish with freshly chopped parsley for a burst of color and freshness. Serve the Cajun Chicken Orzo in deep plates, allowing the creamy orzo to cradle the succulent chicken and vibrant veggies.

Cajun Chicken Orzo Recipe

Cajun Chicken Orzo Recipe

Yield: 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes

Looking for a quick and savory dish that will transport your taste buds to the heart of Louisiana? The Cajun Chicken Orzo recipe is here to satisfy your cravings. This one-pot wonder combines tender chicken, zesty Cajun seasoning, and creamy orzo into a symphony of flavors that'll have you coming back for seconds. In this article, we'll guide you through crafting this soulful dish step by step.

Ingredients

  • 3 chicken breasts , cut into small strips
  • 1-3 tbsp Cajun seasoning note: if your seasoning is spicy add ½ tbsp
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ tbsp butter
  • 1 onion , finely diced
  • 2 garlic cloves , minced
  • 2 tbsp chopped sun-dried tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste (tomato purée)
  • 1 cup (200g) Orzo pasta
  • 1 cup (240ml) chicken broth or stock made with a stock cube
  • 1 cup (30g) shredded spinach
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) heavy cream (double cream)
  • 3 tbsp grated parmesan cheese , plus extra to serve

Instructions

  • Combine the chicken, Cajun seasoning and salt. Heat the butter and oil in a large pan (a Chef’s pan with a lid is ideal) and pan fry the chicken until it starts to color.

  • Add the onion, garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, tomato paste and stir to combine. Cook over low heat for five minutes, stirring frequently.

  • Stir in the orzo, cook for a minute or so then add the chicken broth. Bring to a simmer, cover the pan and cook for about 20 minutes, stirring frequently. Orzo absorbs liquid readily so keep an eye on the pan and add a little extra water, as needed, if the pan gets too dry.

  • Uncover the pan and test the orzo – it should be almost tender but with a little bite to it. Stir in the shredded spinach so that it wilts.

  • Stir in the cream and add the grated Parmesan. You should have a deliciously indulgent creamy dish. Check the seasoning and serve with extra Parmesan cheese.

Notes

This creamy Cajun chicken orzo tastes best as soon as cool enough to devour! Leftovers will keep for a couple of days in the fridge. To reheat, add a splash of water or broth and bring to a simmer in a saucepan. Alternatively reheat in a microwave until piping hot, stirring halfway through.
