Let’s Get Cooking!

Now that you have all your ingredients ready, it’s time to start cooking New Orleans BBQ Shrimp.

Step 1: Season the Shrimp

  • In a bowl, combine the peeled and deveined shrimp with olive oil, Creole seasoning, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Toss the shrimp to coat them evenly with the seasoning.

Step 2: Sauté the Shrimp

  • Heat a large skillet or pan over medium-high heat.
  • Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for about a minute until fragrant.
  • Quickly add the seasoned shrimp to the skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side or until they turn pink and opaque. Be careful not to overcook them.

Step 3: Create the Sauce

  • Reduce the heat to medium-low and remove the shrimp from the skillet, setting them aside.
  • In the same skillet, add Worcestershire sauce, dry white wine, and lemon juice. Stir to combine.
  • Allow the sauce to simmer and reduce by half, which should take about 5-7 minutes.
  • Return the cooked shrimp to the skillet, and add the chopped fresh parsley and unsalted butter. Stir well to coat the shrimp evenly and allow the butter to melt.

Step 4: Serve and Enjoy

  • Once the shrimp are heated through and the sauce has thickened slightly, your New Orleans BBQ Shrimp is ready to be served.
  • Dish out the shrimp and sauce onto a serving platter, and garnish with lemon wedges.
  • Serve your New Orleans BBQ Shrimp with crusty French bread or over a bed of rice to soak up all the delicious flavors.

New Orleans BBQ Shrimp Recipe

Yield: 2
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes

If you're a seafood lover with a craving for bold and spicy flavors, look no further than the iconic New Orleans BBQ Shrimp. This dish, despite its name, doesn't involve a traditional barbecue sauce but is instead a rich and flavorful concoction that will leave your taste buds tingling with delight. In this article, we'll take you through the steps to create this classic New Orleans dish right in your own kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1/4 cup hot sauce (or to taste)
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/3 cup beer, wine or broth
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (~1/2 lemon)
  • 2 teaspoons creole seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 tablespoons butter, chilled and cut into 1/2 inch pieces
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a pan over medium-high heat, add the garlic, saute until fragrant, about 30 seconds, add the hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, beer, lemon juice, creole seasoning and pepper, bring to a simmer and cook until the sauce is reduced by half, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Add the shrimp and cook until cooked through, about 2-3 minutes per side depending on the size of the shrimp.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium-low, stir in the chilled butter until it melts, season with salt to taste and enjoy with french bread to soak up all of that tasty sauce!

Notes

  • Normally the shrimp would be served in the shells with the heads still on but if you have some squeamish eaters, just remove the shells and make things easier at the dinner table.
  • Different hot sauces have different levels of heat and everyone has a different tolerance to heat so add the hot sauce a little at a time until you get it to the level of heat that you desire. (I tend use Franks Red Ho hot sauce.)
  • Different creole seasonings have different amounts of salt and some have quite a bit so go easy on it, adding a bit at a time to get the sauce to a nice level. (I tend use homemade creole seasoning to have more control over the salt content.)

Option: Instead of simmering to reduce the sauce by half to thicken it, you could add corn starch mixed into cold water to thicken it and save some time.

Option: Garnish with sliced green onions or chopped parsley to taste.
